About the project
Siaqol is a small village in the mountains of Afghanistan, in Ghazni Province. Around 70 girls and boys from Siaqol and the surrounding area are taught at the village school – until now in two small rooms that urgently need replacing. That’s why we are rebuilding the school building.
Lessons in a ruin and on the cold floor
The older part of the school has largely fallen into disrepair; only one room remains intact. The building looks like a ruin, but is still used for lessons due to a lack of space. Ten young people are crammed onto two school desks, and it is freezing cold in the small room. A white sheet of plastic in a wooden frame serves as a blackboard.
Their younger classmates in the second, newer building have no tables or chairs at all: they sit on the cold floor of the classroom and write on their knees. The walls serve as their blackboard – covered in several layers of writing in Persian and English. There is no heating and there are no toilets.
What we are building
The new, larger school building replaces the two existing ones, so that all the children and teenagers can be taught there. The school will have electricity, heating and separate toilets for boys and girls, and the classrooms will have tables, chairs and a blackboard. This way, we are enabling girls and boys in a remote mountainous region to attend school in a building that will remain safe in the long term.
Where we are now
Construction began in August 2025. By mid-November 2025, the basement and ground floor were already in place, and the building was being made ready for the winter break. The second phase of construction, with the upper floor, was planned for spring 2026.
One year after construction began, the first two construction phases are complete: the school building is standing. In the third phase, the facade has been fully plastered and is now being painted blue. The window frames were made directly on site, the photovoltaic system has been installed, and a small building for the sanitary facilities has been built near the school. Work on the schoolyard is also under way. Next come further interior work and the installation of windows, doors and the kitchen.
All this is made possible by our many donors and by the tireless work of the engineer and the residents of Siaqol and the surrounding area on the building site. It is a great joy to see the school gradually taking shape. Even greater is our joy at the gratitude shown to us by the children, teenagers and adults of Siaqol and the neighbouring villages.
Help us
We are still raising funds for the remaining construction work. Support us and help provide the girls and boys in Siaqol with a better learning environment!
